Fiji Media Watch is a young organisation. Begun only a few years ago,
it was incorporated and registered under the Charitable Trust Ordinance
in August, 1994. In June 1993 a public outcry against explicit sex
scenes in advertisements carried in the daily newspapers and posters
led to the setting up of Fiji Media Watch.
It is a civic society organisation registered under the terms of the
Charitable Trust Ordinance of Fiji. Its aim is to create a media
literate public so that the people of Fiji might gain maximum benefit
from use of modern media while offsetting their negative effects.
In 1993 a public outcry against what was considered irresponsible
practices and cultural insensitivity in the media led to the formation
of Fiji Media Watch. It began as a monitoring body and a forum for
airing media concerns. Members soon came to realise the need for
awareness raising and media education, which would enable people to
counteract the consumer mentality and adopt a more positive critical
attitude towards the media.
